Foxconn Technology Group is aiming to quickly bring production levels back to normal at its iPhone assembly site in China hit by a Covid outbreak and worker shortages, its chief executive said Thursday. Foxconn is still operating its main iPhone plant in Zhengzhou under a closed-loop system, which means largely keeping the site shut off from the outside world and allowing workers to only move between their lodging and the production lines, the company said. Foxconn didn’t say when it plans to end such operations.

TSMC plans in the coming months to announce it will build a cutting-edge semiconductor plant north of Phoenix, beside another chip factory that the company committed to in 2020, according to people familiar with the expansion plans. The scale of the investment is expected to be roughly similar to the $12 billion it committed two years ago, the people said.
TOKYO— Foxconn Technology Group is planning to shift some production from its Covid-struck iPhone factory in central China to other sites in the country, people familiar with the matter said, as many workers frightened by the outbreak have left the factory. Foxconn has been struggling to contain a Covid-19 outbreak in its Zhengzhou facility, the world’s biggest assembly site for Apple Inc.’s smartphones. There, hundreds of thousands of workers have been largely shut off from the outside world for more than two weeks after the company announced the introduction of closed-loop operations, which means that workers are allowed to move only between their dorms or homes and the production lines.

"I think there may be a chance to certainly ease the tensions, hopefully, given the challenges China faces in keeping the Chinese economy growing," Yang said.

It was “the most prudent, or most low-key statement in years” issued by Xi on their strategic relationship, Shi said. Under Xi, China has forged ever closer ties with Russia. Six days later, in a desperate escalation of the devastating war, Putin announced a “partial mobilization” of Russian citizens in a televised speech, and even raised the specter of using nuclear weapons. Both leaders share a deep suspicion and hostility toward the United States, which they believe is bent on holding China and Russia down. The main factor driving the strategic alignment between Russia and China is the perception of threats from the United States, said Hart with CSIS.

"The development of a strategic partnership with China is an unconditional priority of Russian foreign policy," the security council said in a statement. The deepening partnership between the rising superpower of China and the natural resources titan of Russia has raised alarm in some Western capitals. China has refrained from condemning Russia's military operation against Ukraine or calling it an "invasion".
